Kortrijk (Heule), February 3rd, 2025 – Kortrijk-based chocolatier Vandenbulcke won the silver award yesterday at ISM Cologne, the world's leading trade fair for chocolate and confectionery, with its innovative Belgian chocolate Pulp 'n Choc Fruity Mix. The filling of this exquisite praline is made with upcycled cocoa pulp, the white flesh surrounding cocoa beans inside the pod that normally goes to waste. Using this cocoa pulp avoids around 70% waste and provides local cocoa farmers with additional income. After a natural, vegan variant, three new fruit flavor Pulp 'n Chocs managed to convince the panel. The award confirms Vandenbulcke's innovative approach, in which sustainability and creativity go hand in hand to make a positive impact on the planet and people.

Sustainable on the inside and outside

This is the third time Chocolatier Vandenbulcke has received an award at ISM. It achieved silver for the Petit Melo in 2020 and gold for the Cabosse in 2022. The silver award for Pulp 'n Choc confirms that the company is on the right track and sustainable pralines such as Pulp 'n Choc are the chocolates of the future.

“Pulp 'n Choc was born out of the idea that every sector needs to play its part in a sustainable future,” Jelle Vandenbulcke, CEO of Chocolatier Vandenbulcke, says. “We have already noticed the effects of climate change in our sector. Unpredictable weather, harmful insects and pathogens such as black pod disease have all resulted in fewer cocoa beans. At the same time, 70% of cocoa fruit tends to go to waste, which is absurd. We put this right by using the pulp, the flavorful white flesh surrounding the cocoa bean, to make the upcycled cocoa filling for Pulp’n Choc. Sustainability goes well beyond the product alone, though. The Pulp 'n Choc packaging, for example, is fully recyclable, and we have replaced plastic trays with sustainable paper. We also use Fairtrade chocolate, and farmers now also get to sell their cocoa beans’ pulp, which offers them an additional source of income. This allows us to make a positive impact on the planet and on the people behind our chocolate.”

Convincing new fruit flavors

Pulp 'n Choc already had a natural vegan variant, but this year the new Fruity Mix has won silver at ISM. The three fruit flavors – white chocolate with strawberry, dark chocolate with lemon and milk chocolate with orange – impressed the judges. These new variants allow Chocolatier Vandenbulcke to reach a wider audience and make sustainable chocolates more accessible and more established, paving the way for them to become the norm.

The ISM panel tasted more than 100 snacks and confectionery products and awarded the Pulp 'n Choc Fruity Mix second prize because of its unique new flavors and the sustainable nature of the entire product. The full Pulp 'n Choc range is now available in stores and you can still discover these delicious pralines at ISM Cologne, Hall 4, Stand O020 until Wednesday, February 5th!
